ISLAMABAD - Former Test cricketer Sarfraz Nawaz on Thursday urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to give back the responsibility of Twenty20 captaincy to Misbahul Haq saying at least he is a dependable batsman.
M Hafeez stepped down as T20 skipper last week after the team's failure to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh. Sarfraz said Misbah was the only batsman on whom the team can depend. "He is a consistent scorer and never gives up whenever the team is in trouble," he added. “Just see our team's performance in the World T20 Cup match against West Indies. Our batsmen weren't able to play the whole 20 overs and were all-out on 82 runs in 17.5 overs. We need Misbah back in the T20 team,” he asserted.
Former legendary batsman Javed Miandad said whichever player was chosen as captain should be a new one. "Pakistan can only succeed if a fair and just captain is appointed," he said. Miandad said: “We need those players in the team who can play for the country and not for themselves. A player should know if he is not able to play anymore or he is injured than he should opt against playing," he said.
Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar said Pakistan lost the T20 World Cup due to their own mistakes. "We need a good captain," he said. Shoaib said nothing was going good in Pakistan cricket at the moment. "We won the 2009 World T20 because we played with unity," he said.
“Our bowlers don't know what they are doing. You got to bowl yorkers towards the off and not on the pads when a player is strong in that region. If a player feels he is past his prime, he should leave. If a player has two or three years left in him, he should be aware of that," he said adding there must be a check and balance in the team.
