Sarfaraz hails ban

ISLAMABAD Former Test cricketer Sarfarz Nawaz welcomed the Pakistan Cricket Boards decision of imposing ban and fine on the six players on the recommendations of inquiry committee formed to probe the reasons of national teams dismal show in Australia. The Committee comprising Wasim Bari (chairman), Wazir Ali Khoja, Yawar Saeed, Zakir Khan and Taffazul Haider Rizvi investigated issued related to discipline, ball-tampering, grouping and other reasons of poor show in the light of clauses of the central contract. Sarfaraz, while talking to The Nation on Wednesday, said that it was good a decision. I have come to know about the life ban on former captains Younus Khan and Mohammad Yousuf but both were close to the end of their careers but the board finally took harsh decision which would be appreciated as the people of Pakistan were expecting such an action, he added. Sarfarz further said that the ban on the former captain Shoaib Malik and all rounder Rana Naved-ul-Hasan for one year along with Rs.2 million fine would also close the chapters of the both international all-rounders. The committee did well and made the recommendations after analysing the facts. It is historical verdict, he viewed. Responding to a question, he said that there might be bit of pressure on Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) from International Cricket Council (ICC) in taking ruthless action against the players because everyone was aware of the acts of national team in Australia. If we had implemented the recommendations of the Justice Qayyum Report in the past, we would not have faced these actions against the players, he said. Twenty20 captain Shahid Afridi has been fined Rs. three million and the Akmal brothers (Kamran and Umer) were fined Rs. three and two million respectively. Afridi and Akmal brothers were put on six-month probations. After these decision, we can build a strong team for the World Cup 2011, he added. To another question he said that Mohammad Aamir should play on ODI and Twenty 20 matches to maintain his fitness. He is brilliant bowler and performed well in the recently concluded series. He is an asset for the Pakistan team, he maintained. It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan lost three Test match series 3-0, five one day international matches series 5-0 besides losing the lone T-20 match during the Australia trip. Waqar shocked Pakistans new coach Waqar Younis was shocked over the cricket boards decision to ban and fine several leading national players. Waqar, who is to take over as Pakistan coach later this week, said he was unaware of the punishment handed out to the players. This is shocking and surprising development. I need time to get more details, said Waqar who is currently in Sydney but is scheduled to arrive in Pakistan within next few days. Waqar replaced Intikhab Alam as Pakistans coach after the teams disastrous tour of Australia.
