Management keeps faith in Kamran

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has backed wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal despite poor show behind the wickets. Waqar insisted that Kamran Akmal will not be dropped despite his shoddy work behind the stumps that cost the team the World Cup match against New Zealand. Waqar said that Pakistan has no other choice right now in the World Cup and it would be a dangerous move to try out part-time keepers in such a big event. Waqar said he don't think this is the time to put the blame on someone. It's a fact that he didn't do the best keeping, the standard was not good and he dropped a few catches, he added. He said that those were straight sitters; it was not as if they were difficult catches, but then its cricket and such things do happen. It was a bad day for him as he dropped catches which really cost us the game, he added. He said the team management had asked Kamran to improve his weaknesses through hard work. The Pakistan wicketkeeper who breathed life into New Zealand World Cup hopes for becoming leader of the group as Australia have three matches remaining in Group A, the last of which is against the unpredictable Pakistan in Colombo in which Pakistan will turn up, good or bad, remains anyone's guess. Pakistan's show at Kandy was a farce, particularly of Kamran Akmal. Taylor, yet to score, edged a catch off the bowling of Shoaib Akhtar the ball flew between wicketkeeper and first slip with Akmal looking uninterested to attempt the catch. Two balls later Akmal seemed to pouch a simple chance then managed to drop it immediately as he crossed his legs in a shocking piece of footwork. The 29-year-old wicketkeeper/batsman averages 27.25 in 133 one-day internationals and the last of his five centuries came two years ago against Australia. Another of Akmal's awful wicket keeping performances which might spring to mind for Australian fans was his effort in dropping Mike Hussey three times in quick succession in last year's Sydney Test, as the veteran batsman carried on to score a match-winning century. Akmal denied last week that his performance in the Sydney Test of January 2010 was suspect, saying these things happen. "I play for love of cricket, not for money. I didn't drop catches to help Australia," he said. The ICC says its anti-corruption and security unit has an officer present at World Cup games, but their specific activities won't be discussed publicly. On the other hand, Shahid Afridi hinted at replacing Kamran by Umar Akmal and the former will be used as an opener. Team manager Intikhab Alam was also in favour of Umar Akmal as keeper. But both denied to axe the keeper from team and said that it was not the time to axe Kamran as he had won a lot of matches for Pakistan in past. Imran Khan said the management must now also try out a new opening combination as the present openers failed to deliver during the tournament. He suggested Pakistan should open with Kamran and Asad Shafiq and sent in Younis and Misbah-ul-Haq at the number three and four positions followed by Umar Akmal, Abdul Razzaq and Shahid Afridi. Imran said that Razzaq will prove beneficial at number six because of his hard hitting. Imran also advised Captain Shahid Afridi and team to learn from the defeat and move on and try to get top spot in the group to avoid playing in India. On the other hand, Pakistan Cricket Board has announced Central Contracts to the players without gauging players performance and Kamran Akmal was placed in Grade-1. This was not the right time to announce the central contracts. It was better that PCB had delayed announcing till the conclusion of the World Cup. In the end I request to play as a one-unit; quit greed and dishonesty; to play like a one-unit will help bring laurel for the country. There is no dearth of talent in the country but needs to explore, polish and place on a right spot. God also help those who help themselves. May God give us courage to bear defeat as game is game but respectable defeat without fighting arose suspicion amongst the people of the country. Pakistan have still a change as they score big win against Zimbabwe and beat former World Champion Australia to take top slot in the tournament.
