Players, selection committee behind downfall: Hafeez

Lahore - Former T20 captain M Hafeez has admitted that players, selection committee and management are responsible for the pathetic performance in the limited-over cricket.

Talking in the Waqt News programme ‘Game Beat’, Hafeez said: “It was due to pathetic performances of players and poor selection and management, we are lagging far behind in the limited-over game. First, we need to learn from our mistakes and have to be consistent in our performances and secondly, the selection committee must not keep on changing in the team one after another. If the players will be assigned proper role, given proper chances and encouraged to perform their role consistently, we can improve a lot.”

Taking about Test team and its best performance, Hafeez said: “The performance of our Test team is quite well because it is not disturbed time and again with a lot of changes in it, as compare to ODI and T20 teams, where a hell of changing can be witnessed which disturbed not only the team combinations, but also badly affected the outcome of the teams.” Revealing about his fitness, Hafeez said: “I was struggling for my fitness but the results were not up to the mark but I have been working under the new framework, and feeling quite better now.”

About England tour, the senior cricketer said: “The tour of England is very important for us. We have worked really hard for it and going there with a positive frame of mind so it is hoped that we will perform well in England.”

The Test opener said that there was no dearth of talent in the country but there was a dire need to hunt that talent. “I have launched ‘skills shine’ plan with the aim of returning to my country which gave me name and fame across the world, so through this plan, I will provide some quality players to the country.”

“Our first class cricket structure isn’t a good one and the players have to face a hell of difficulties to make their way to the national team, and in this process, many of the genuine players were neglected and deprived of representing the country. It is the dire need of the hour is to make our first class cricket structure improved and tough one so that only genuine players may make their way to the first class cricket,” he added.

Hafeez also expressed his wish to finish his cricket career at a high note. “I want my fans and cricketer lovers may remember me through my records and runs. I also want to play some remarkable innings for my country which may be remembered forever.”
