Makau out of Berlin marathon

NAIROBI - Marathon world record holder Patrick Makau has been forced to pull out of a new attempt over the distance later this month in Berlin due to a knee injury. "I intended to attack my own world record in Berlin but now the first thing on my mind is to fully recover from this injury so I can return to training," the Kenyan said. Organisers of the September 29 Berlin Marathon said Makau was suffering from swelling in the knee and had been ordered by doctors to stop running while it recovers. Makau, 28, set the current official world mark of 2hr 03min 38sec on the fast and flat Berlin course two years ago. Still lining up for a record attempt though is Wilson Kipsang, who set the official second best time of 2:03.42 -- just four seconds off the record -- in Frankfurt in 2011.–AFP
