ISLAMABAD The work on the solitary swimming facility at Pakistan Sports Complex could not be resumed despite the passing of the deadline on July 15. A source told TheNation here on Thursday that Federal Minister for Sports Mir Ijaz Hussain Jakhrani had directed the officials to complete this project before July 15 after receiving a large number of complaints from the members of swimming pool. At present, the work is going on leisurely pace and it cannot be completed in next couple of weeks. The contractor is a blue eyed lad of the officials of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and the Ministry of Sports and has failed to complete the work in time, he added. The PSB was earning proximately Rs.350, 000 per month annual in the shape of membership fee of swimming pool, which it has not been able to earn since January due to renovation work. Earlier, the renovation work had to be completed before May 23 but owing to financial hurdles and negligence of PSB and Ministry of Sports officials, this project could not be completed well in time, source said. Director General PSB, Amir Hamza Gillani, told this scribe that the contractor was doing well and he would take some more days to complete the project. The labour is working day and night to complete it and they will give final touches in the next week and it will be open for the members. The PSB is satisfied over the performance of the contractor, he said. Meanwhile, contractor Nawaz Niazi, who was previously an employee in the PSB, said that the rain in the twin cities Rawalpindi and Islamabad forced the delay in work. We will complete it very soon but final date cannot be given. Owing to rain, we have to stop paint work of the swimming pool. We have to change the iron grill and it took more time than expected, he said. The renovation work of the roof of swimming pool is highly technical in nature. The fabrication of roof and repair of trusses is tedious and time-taking task. Paint has been manufactured specially for this purpose. The rain had disturbed the ongoing painting work. All the clamps, bolts and channels have been manufactured specially for the scheme, said Faik Ali Chacher, a spokesman for PSB.
