Pakistan today sealed a 3-1 victory against Indonesia in their Asia/Oceania Zone Group II second round tie, as Abid Ali Akbar defeated David Susanto.
Akbar, substituted for Aqeel Khan, triumphed 60 76(2) 06 62 to earn his side a chance to play for Zone Group I promotion against either Chinese Taipei or the Philippines.
Pakistan won both of the singles rubbers on the tie’s opening day to give them a 2-0 lead.
Also, Aqeel Khan came from a set down to beat Aditya Sasongko in four sets. Then Samir Iftikhar dealt hosts Indonesia a major setback by rallying from a two-set deficit against Susanto for Pakistan’s second crucial point.
The Indonesian pair of Christopher Rungkat and Sunu-Wahyu Trijati gave their country hope with a five-set victory in the doubles rubber. But, despite a third-set blip, Akbar proved too good for Susanto in the fourth match-up.
If Pakistan can defeat either Chinese Taipei, led by world No. 61 Yen-Hsun Lu, or the Philippines in September, Pakistan would be back in Zone Group I for the first time since 2006.
PTF President Salim Saifullah Khan has extended heartiest congratulations to the entire tennis fraternity in Pakistan on the brilliant performance by the players.
