ISLAMABAD - Wapda, PAF, Navy and Army registered victories in the ongoing 49th Allied Bank National Volleyball Championship 2016, after defeating their respective opponents in the pool matches played here at Liaqat Gymnasium here on Sunday.
In the first match of the day, defending champions Wapda were given a close scare by Pakistan Ordinance Factories (POF) Wah, who showed lot of courage and hunger to champions. Wapda easily took the first set 25-10, but they were stunned by POF in the second set 22-25. But POF failed to carry on with the good work and were simply outclassed by Wapda, who took the third and fourth sets with same score of 25-14.
In the second match, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) thrashed Police 3-0. PAF took the first set 25-19, second set 25-22 and third set 25-17. Airmen were at their usual best, although Police did pose some resistance in the first and second sets, but after that they just ran out of steam and were simply outclassed by the mighty PAF.
In the third match, Navy hammered Punjab 3-0. Navy won the first set 25-17, second set 25-18 and third set 25-17.
In the 4th and last match of the day, one of the pre-tournament favourites Army were up against KP, who very surprisingly gave Army a real run for their money before going down 3-1 fighting. It was truly top class performance by the KP boys’, who were pitted against highly professional side. Although Army won the match 3-1 but they were never able to dictate terms in the 4-set match as they won 25-22, 20-25, 25-21 and 25-23. Punjab face POF, KP take on Police, Wapda face Navy and PAF take on Army in the last pool matches today.
The semi-finals will be held on Tuesday and final on Wednesday.
