Butt likely to be named Pak cricket team captain

LAHORE The Pakistan Cricket Board is contemplating move to bring in fresh blood in the line-up for the coming Asia Cup in Sri Lanka some option will come under discussion during the May 22 meeting of the selection committee. Among those contemplations, handing over the test captaincy to Salman Butt is also one of the moves. It has been learnt that the PCB is moving to rest some of the top veteran players and the likely sword of change in the team would fall on Misbah-ul-Haq, Abdul Razzaq, Mohamamd Sami, Mohammad Hafeez. Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi also believes that it is time for the experienced players to make way for new talent in the national side. Afridi thinks it is time to tap into the pool of talent in Pakistan, especially for the shorter format of the game. He added: There is no dearth of talent in Pakistan, especially in the Twenty20 format, the youngsters should be given a chance in the national team. The PCB will announce the squads for next months Asia Cup and the tour of England on May 22 and opener Salman Butt is likely to get the Test captaincy. Reports coming from the board said the acting on the advice of former coaches Intikhab Alam and Aaqib Javed, the PCB has ruled out selection of banned seniors like Muhammad Yousuf, Younus Khan and Shoaib Malik from selection. This is a suggestion that Aaqib gave to the inquiry committee of the board during the hearings in February and March and he had told them to appoint a candidate for the tests in England against Australia and England, reports said. The inclusion of Shahzaib Hassan and some to the top performers of the domestic cricket are on the cards. The board is planning to announce different captains for different versions and if Afridi does not lead the team in the T20 and ODI format, Butt would be given the charge of the Test side. Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has also backed Salman Butt for the job, reported ESPN. With several nations experimenting with separate captains for different formats of the game, Pakistan could well follow suit. Prolific opener Salman Butt is on the Pakistan Cricket Board radar to take over as new Test skipper. After being humiliated in Australia (Pakistan lost the Test, ODI and T20 matches), Mohammad Yousuf was stripped of his captaincy. Afridi may have done a good job in the limited over format, but the all-rounder does not make the Test squad. Hence, Akram feels Butt is the best option available. Akram said: Salman has performed really well in recent times. Afridis place in the Test squad is not fixed, so there is no question of him being made the skipper. In the absence of senior blokes like Mohammad Yousuf, Younus Khan and Shoaib Malik, Salman is the right choice for the job. Reports say Inty and Aaqib are suspecting Kamran Akmals involvement in match-fixing during the series against Australia in December-January. Staying clear of this, Akram says he was happy not to be part of the probe. Akram said: I have read it in the newspapers. I was also a part of this enquiry and thank God, I could not make it due to my television commitments. I could not attend any of their meetings. The 43-year-old Akram also feels there is a lot of mistrust between the players and the PCB. He said: One thing is for sure, players have lost faith in the Board and vice-versa. This was a very private inquiry. So I do not think next time anybody will trust the PCB. This is not on. The players have gone through a lot. They performed badly in Australia and then went through a lot of probes. But they did well to reach the T20 World Cup semi-finals.
