Sadia stuns Fathoum in Women Squash

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s top junior squash player Sadia Gul made the biggest upset in the first round of the Bahria Town International Women Squash Championship 2014, when she ousted Sri Lankan Fathoum Issadin 3-1 in 30 minutes at Safari Club; Safari Villas I Bahria Town squash courts on Friday. All the other seeded players had a relatively better day with only exception of Saima Shaukat, who was stretched to limit by Riffat Khan, who went down fighting 3-2. Sadia Gul dispatched off Issadin in a tough and nerve-wrecking contest. She started the match on a very high note, as she won the first game 11-6 while in the second game, she dropped just one point to take the game 11-1. Bu then Sadia lost her momentum, which cost her dearly in the third game, as Issadin fought back and took the game 11-5. The fourth game was a see saw battle as it was 2-2, 5-5, 7-7, 9-9 but then Sadia used all her experience and won next two points in a row to take the game 11-9, thus won the encounter in 30 minutes. In the first match of the day, ex-Pakistan No 1 Zoya Khalid beat Farah Manzoor 3-0 with the score of 11-1, 11-4, 11-6. In the second match, Pakistan No 1 player Sammer Anjum beat national junior champ Amna Latif 3-1 with the score of 11-4, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8. In the third game, Muqaddas Ashraf outclassed Madina Zafar by 12-10, 11-9, 15-13 while in the fourth match, Rushna Mehboob beat Habiba Khan 3-0;  11-5, 11-7, 11-4. Saima Shaukat survived a close scare before beating a determined Riffat Khan 3-2 with the score of 11-6, but Riffat bounced back to take second game 11-8, 3-11, 11-9, 11-4.–Staff Reporter
