India beat West Indies to go one up

KINGSTON (AFP) - India beat West Indies by 63 runs in the first Test at Sabina Park on Thursday, taking a 1-0 lead in their three-Test series. Earlier six wickets -- two apiece for Praveen Kumar and Amit Mishra -- put India on the verge of victory as they reduced the West Indies to 226 for nine in their second innings in the first Test on Thursday. Kumar collected three for 42 from 16 overs and Mishra two for 39 from eight, as West Indies crumbled, after starting the day on 131 for three in search of 326 for victory. Kumar removed the overnight pair of Darren Bravo, bowled behind his back for the top score so far of 41, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who was caught at extra cover for 30 inside the first half hour. Harbhajan Singh then spoiled Carlton Baugh Jr's 29th birthday celebrations when he had him caught at leg-slip for a duck, leaving West Indies 150/6. India's champion off-spinner was, however, quickly removed from the attack, when West Indies captain Darren Sammy launched him for three successive sixes over long-on into the Great Northern Stand. But Mishra cut short Sammy's fun when he had him caught at extra cover for 25, and inflicted more agony on the hosts when he had Brendan Nash lbw for nine attempting an ugly slog; the hosts reeling on 188 for eight. India again met some resistance from the West Indies tail, with Ravi Rampaul again making a strong case for promotion in the home team's batting order. He made 34 before he was caught behind, gloving a snorter from Ishant Sharma, who has three for 77 from 16 overs. The Indians will be forced to return after the interval to complete the demolition job, after Fidel Edwards and Devendra Bishoo held on in the closing stages prior to lunch. Meanwhile, Guilt-ridden after dropping Indian centurion Rahul Dravid when he had barely started his innings, West Indies captain Sammy said he couldn't sleep a whole night in the ongoing first cricket Test. Dravid, who went on to make 112 helping India set West Indies a tough target of 326, was on six on the second evening at Sabina Park when Sammy dropped a simple catch that came his way. "I didn't sleep well (on Tuesday) at all, knowing that I dropped the ball," remarked Sammy after watching Rahul Dravid build on that chance and stay till the end to score his 32nd Test century and set a 326-run target for the hosts. It was the sixth over of the innings and the score was 14 for 1 when Sammy dropped a regulation chance at second slip off Ravi Rampaul. It still didn't stop Sammy from appreciating the effort of Dravid -- one of the game's truly great batsmen. "Dravid didn't attempt a pull till he was on 98. It clearly shows why he is called The Wall."
