NPC's role projected for disabled persons sports

ISLAMABAD President of Pakistan National Parlaympic Committee (NPCP) Tariq Mustafa highlighted the achievements made by NPCP for the promotion of sports for the disabled persons in Pakistan. While talking to media here at National Press Club on Saturday, he said that since its inception in December 1998, the NPCP has organised 33 training camps, 22 National Sports Championships and six Paralympic Games including one exclusively for the women with disability. It has also ensured the participation of athletes with disability in 15 international/regional sport events. The NPCP is a registered National Sport Federation for Persons with disability, affiliated with International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) and is recognised by the Government of Pakistan as the only sporting body which has the mandate to represent before the IPC and to deal with sports for the disabled in the country. NPCP is managed by a group of dedicated volunteers, and the status of NPCP is at par with the Pakistan Olympic Association, which deals with sports for athletes without disability. Mustafa said that the disabled Pakistani athletes managed to win 51 medals including 14 Gold, 18 Silver and 19 Bronze medals while taking part in international sports events. The NPC has played a significant role in the promotion of sports for the disabled in Asia. Since the inception of APC in 2002, Pakistan holds the portfolio of its Vice President and in the year 2006, the South Asian countries elected Pakistan as its representative to the Board of Executive of Asian Paralympic Committee. On the occasion, Tariq Mustafa welcomed the distinguished gurests and expressed his gratitude to the President APC and all for their participation and contribution for the establishment of South Asia Paralympic Committee (SAPC). The Board considered the report of South Asia Representative of APC and showed their satisfaction on the progress made so far in gearing up the Paralympic Movement in South Asia. The participants were briefed on structure and constitution of SAPC and elections to various positions were held. President APC Dato Zainal, on the occasion, explained the concept of APC as a high performing organisation - the Power House of Asia followed by a reflection of Aisas unity and comradeship, strength and dynamism, excellence and image. Critical issues and challenges concerning Guangzhou Asia Para Games being held in coming December were also discussed in detail. Tariq Mustafa said that the establishment of South Asia Paralypmic Committee, with its headquarters in Pakistan, is an honour for the country and a great success of National Paralympic Committee of Pakistan.
