Joint winners NBP, Wapda receive Quaid-e-Azam Hockey trophy

KARACHI Pakistan Customs organised a brief but impressive ceremony here on Tuesday at Customs Conference Hall to present the golden trophy of Quaid-e-Azam Hockey Tournament to NBP and Wapda who shared the top honour of the competition here recently at Hockey Club of Pakistan. Chief collector Sher Nawaz Khan handed over the glittering golden trophy to the officials of the teams. The teams also equally shared prize money of Rs. 100,000 meant for the winner. The cheques bearing Rs. 50,000 each were sent to the two teams shortly after the championship concluded and the trophy was handed over Tuesday . The two teams had qualified for the final of the championship in which Ghana Customs team was especially invited to play. However, the final could not be held due law and order situation in the city and at the request of the Customs officials the two teams agreed to share the trophy. NBP won the right to keep the trophy for the first six month followed by Wapda. Wapda skipper Sohail Abbas and manager of NBP team Anwar Farooqi jointly received the trophy in the presence of Collector of Customs (preventive) Fateh Muhammad Shaikh and additional collector HQ former Olympian Samiullah. Sami played an important role in revving the championship after a gap of few years. The trophy was launched in 1955. It could not be held annually as was planned at the start and was held only four times till 2010. Now Customs have decided to hold the competition every year at its own ground in Federal Area which has been re-laid with a fresh turf and soon would get the floodlights. Umpires manager Saeed Ahmed, formerly a Karachi player, and Customs media officer Qamar Thalho also attended the function.
