COLOMBO - Angelo Mathews has been appointed captain of Sri Lanka for the solitary Twenty20 fixture in New Zealand’s upcoming tour of the island, according to local media reports.
The news was first reported by the Derana media network on its Sinhala language website Ada Derana. Mathews replaces Mahela Jayawardene after the latter stepped down at the end of the ICC World Twnety20 2012.
The 25-year-old, who was vice-captain during the recent World Twenty20 tournament, was expected to take over when Jayawardene announced that he was stepping down after the loss to West Indies in the tournament final.
