ISLAMABAD - Jamal Nasir and Nadir Khan outplayed their respective Indian opponents in the quarter-finals of the second Benazir Bhutto Shaheed International Boxing Championship bouts to move into semi-finals here at Liaquat Gymnasium on Sunday.
Apart from Jamal and Nadir it was a mixed day for Pakistani boxers as they won six out of 12 bouts and lost the same number of bouts. A total of 20 bouts were held while Pakistan participated in a dozen of bouts. A small crowd witnessed the contests and backed Pakistani boxers during their fight and played the key role in hosts boxers’ victory against their opponents particularly against Indian boxers.
Had the crowd and a large gathering of journalists were not supporting home boxers the results of the bouts could have been different. It was the vocal support and unabated cheering which lifted the morale of the Pakistani boxers that helped them showing a much better result.
The third day finally witnessed the first knockout of the day as Syrian boxer Mohahhad Ghossoun downed his Sri Lankan opponent B Nuwan Sujeewa in the first round. Pakistan number 1 boxer Aamir Khan was also beaten by his Mongolian opponent.
The overall arrangements at the venue were relatively far better than the previous days and the PSB officials were looking quite active and helping out the journalists and other concerned persons during their duty period. Meanwhile, Pakistan Boxing Federation President Doda Khan Bhutto finally takes out time from his busy schedule and visited the arena and remained there for some time. The event management company remained absent from the scene.
