Bajwa hopeful of resuming hockey ties with India soon

LAHORE - General Secretary Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) Asif Bajwa has said that discussions are underway with India as well as other countries to resume the international hockey in the country during this year. He said during a press briefing here on Tuesday at National Hockey Stadium. Tournament Director Rana Mujahid and Khalid Bashir were also present on the occasion. Asif maintained that third Junior Super Hockey League will be kicked off today (Wednesday) at National Hockey Stadium in a bid to draw a backup pool for the national side. He said that a total of eight teams appear in the 12-day event including Quetta, Bahawalpur, Lahore, Sialkot, Karachi, Faisalabad, Islamabad, Peshawar and PHF Academy. Scrutiny committee has also been nominated to ensure the age-limit with the help of NADRA but also conduct facial scrutiny and bone tests to verify their age to discourage the participation of over-aged players in the league, he claimed. We are preparing for our immediate target, Singapores Asia Cup that features under18 players, PHF Secretary added. The significant part of the league is that we are offering the youth an opportunity to prove their mettle and prove their talent and ironically such league will help us to build up a pool of backup players, added Bajwa. Asif vowed to arrange such leagues at the senior level also but federation is facing challenge to find out window to organise a commercial league at the senior level, Bajwa said. Even the FIH is facing extensive challenge as so far the competition body meet thrice to find the window, he added.
