Iman, Aqeel lift Subh-e-Nau titles


KARACHI - ANISUDDIN KHAN - Iman Qureshi, who is yet to get a place in national rankings, won her first major title when she stunned Pakistan Pakistan number one Saba Aziz in straight sets in final of the Subh-e-Nau National Ranking Tennis Championship on CDGK tennis courts Sunday.
The teenager from Lahore, who sprang the biggest surprise of the championships when she ousted Sara Mansoor in the quarter final couple of days ago, recorded second and bigger shock of the event when she won the final 7-5, 6-4 against Saba. Victory gave Iman a winner's cheque of Rs 20,000 while Saba received Rs 12,000.
Top seed and favourite Aqeel Khan won men’s single final defeating his youngest brother Yasir Khan in a closely contested two-set match 7-5,7-6 (10-8). Yasir stood up to his more reputed elder brother and fought well for every point. He even made Aqeel to struggle for winning point.
Adil Kohari won boys Under-18 title by defeating Ahmed Baber, who qualified to play in the event and reached the final. Adil won the final when his opponent retired in second set trailing 3-0. Adil had won the first set 6-2. He won cash prize of 12,000 while the runners up took Rs. 7000.
Nofil Kaleem of Islamabad continued to dominate boys under 14 event which he won by defeating Dawar Rehan 6-1, 6-4 to receive the prize money of Rs7000. Runners up took Rs 4000.
Hood Azher won boys under 11 final with 8-6 win over Shazil Malik. Aqeel Khan and Jalil Khan took men’s doubles final and prize purse of Rs 12,000 while defeating Yasir Khan and Heera Ashiq 6-2,6-0.The losing pair took Rs 8000.
CDGK administrator M Hussain Syed was guest of honour at the prize distribution ceremony. He lauded the efforts of Subh-e-Nau and announced a special grant of Rs 500,000 for the NGO. He also promised that he would look into the request of the NGO to start a tennis academy at the tennis complex and try to allot a plot for creating tennis facility.
He also announced reviving CDGK Administrator’s Tennis Cup which was held regularly in the past as KMC Mayor Cup with the cooperation Subh-e-Nau. Chairperson of Subh e Nau Shahida Farooq was also present on the occasion.
