Coaching Pakistan team not an easy task: Waqar

LAHORE Newly-appointed Pakistan cricket coach Waqar Younis has pointed out that coaching the team is not a bed of roses though he vowed to bring it back to the winning ways. Waqar, commonly known as Burewala express, said he had left his ego behind in Australia and would not disappoint the nation. The history of Pakistan cricket tells us that the coaching of the national team is not an easy task. But someone had to do the job and I dared to accept it and I assure the nation and the Pakistan Cricket Board that I would not disappoint them, said the former fast bowler in an interview with Deutsche Welle Urdu Service. Younis disclosed that his first priority would be to instill discipline and confidence in the team and that would be the first step towards victory. Younis, who had coached the national side on two different occasions, opined that as a nation we would have to change our habit to criticize the team and team management after every defeat. He further added that he was not advocating for his job but for the captain, the manager and the Board. I understand that the people of Pakistan are mad about cricket and their sentiments are badly injured when the national team loses but I would ask them to curb their emotions and try to understand the circumstances before reacting harshly, he asked. He added that the team management, captain and the PCB should be given ample time to deliver. I think that lot of time is required to learn the things involving Pakistan cricket and rectify those issues, he believed. Though in recent years former greats Greg Chappell, Malcom Marshel and Javed Miandad have failed to deliver through their coaching which created an impression that a great cricketer could not be a good coach but Waqar is bent upon to dispel this impression. Coaching is all about management. A coach needs to forget his ego - for being a great player of yesteryears. He should stoop down to the level of his players and think the way they think. I believe no coach is bigger than the game, said the master of reverse swing. Waqar has the immediate task at hand is of defending the T20 World Cup title but he has the forthcoming World Cup 2011 as his main target. Yes, World Cup 2011 is the real target. I have seen immense talent in the Pakistan A and U-19 teams which needs to be groomed and I am sure that in the next few months the things would start moving in the right direction, he hoped. Waqar further said that the form and fitness of the players play a vital role in the international events. In the last T20 World Cup the Pakistan team was in excellent form and I pray it continues same for the next few months. Pakistan is capable of defending its title in the presence of Afridi, Razzaq and Akmal brothers, the coach believed. Waqar hailed the PCBs decision to appoint Afridi as captain and disclosed that he had also recommended his name for the job. Afridi is an all-rounder with a positive frame of mind who had been bowling excellently in last two years. His mere presence in the field generates a fighting spirit amongst the players, Waqar said. To a question, Waqar said a captain should be appointed for at least a years term. Players appeals process to be followed as per constitution: PCB The PCB has made it clear for all those players who were banned or fined after the Australian Tour Inquiry Report have the right to appeal as per the guidelines laid down in the PCB Constitution Clause no 35. All affected players have already been intimated of this. All cases of players who appeal to PCB as per clause 35 of PCB Constitution will be dealt according to the laid down procedure in the PCB Constitution. Whole squad is behind Afridi: Salman Pakistans stylish opening batsman Salman Butt has strongly backed the appointment of Shahid Afridi as captain for the World Twenty20 in the West Indies this year. Shahid Afridi has recently been named as Pakistans captain for their World title defence, and Salman Butt, one of the more experienced members of the squad, has expressed full confidence in Afridis leadership abilities. The whole squad wishes Afridi all the best as skipper and we are all fully behind him, Salman was quoted by Pakpassion, in a welcome shift away from player politics. Salman has represented Pakistan in 119 matches in the three formats of the game, scoring an impressive 11 hundreds and 21 fifties in them. He was also hopeful of Pakistans chances in the tournament, telling PakPassion.net that the whole squad is looking forward to playing in the T20 WC and performing well, and hopefully retaining the trophy. Butt, in his younger years lauded as the next great hope of Pakistani batting, and a member of Pakistans world title winning team in 2009, was realistic in his assessment of Pakistani chances and acknowledged that there were areas for improvement in the team. However, he sounded a very positive note by saying that we all want to improve our individual and team performance as a whole and we want to fight hard for our country and fans.
