KARACHI The second Maroof Tennis Trophy named after Shaikh Muhammad Maroof, a former player, carrying Rs 200,000 in prize money will be held here from June 6 at Defence Authority Club Tennis Court. Hamid Maroof, son of late Maroof, Saeed Hai vice president of PTF and Gulzar Feroz a local businessman and president of the tournament organising committee announced in a press conference on Wednesday. Hamid Maroof, who is sponsoring the championship, announced doubling the prize money. In the first edition the prize money was Rs 100,000 and now it was being doubled, he said. He also spoke about the passion his father had for the sport. He was an avid tennis player and also a promoter of the game in pre-independence era. The Sindh Tennis Association will organise the event on the behalf of the sponsors. The events that will be contested are: Mens, ladies, juniors under-17, boys and girls under-15, under-13 and boys under-11 and under-9 singles and seniors-45, 55, 60 doubles. Last date of entry is June 4. Daily allowance of Rs 200 will be given to all outstation players until elimination. However, all outstation players, coaches, ball boys are exempted from entry fee for one event. Khwaja Saeed Hai is the chairman of the organising committee, Gulzar Feroz, president, Mushtaq Ahmed and Ahsan Hafeez vice presidents, Khalid Rehmani tournament director, Vinod Das organising secretary and Sarwar Hussain media co-ordinator. All outstation players should send their entries through their respective provincial or the District Tennis Association whereas Karachi based players should fill the form available at venue of the championship and leading tennis clubs of the city. The seniors event will be played after 6 pm.
