Imran wins NBP Snooker

KARACHI - No final of a ranking snooker championship played at Karachi Club in recent years was so colourless, dull and eventless as was the NBP Ranking Snooker final which Imran Shahzad won without breaking sweat in straight frames 8-0 against Sohail Shahzad here on Wednesday before a good number of fans of the two finalists. Imran Shahzad won the final 92-24, 55-11, 74-10, 68-10, 62-4, 59-36, 54-37, 59-28. There was only one break of 54 in the sixth frame of the final from the winner who himself looked in disbelief when saw his known opponent surrender frame after frame making the task of Imran easy to win the title. Sohail Shahzad playing the first final of his nascent career looked dazed and nervous and it could be the reason that he could not put his act together and failed to recover at any stage of the final. NBP sports chief former Test cricketer Iqbal Qasim was the guest of honour at the prize distribution ceremony. In his brief remark on the occasion, he revealed that NBP last year supported as many as 60 sporting events in various disciplines across the country. Also present on the occasion were President Pakistan Billiard and Snooker Association (PBSA) Alamgir Shaikh, Vice President PBSA Javed Karim and Secretary Karachi Club Yousuf. The final was an anticlimax to good championship which saw some good tough matches in both the pool league and in the knock-out stage. Some of the big names made their exit from the event in league round and some were knocked-out in the knock-out stage. There was air of high expectation when the two finalists approached the table for the best of 17 frame final showdown. As both had good reputation and were almost equally talented those who had come to watch them were expecting a close contest, however, against their expectation, the clash turned out to be one sided. Imran Shahzad won cash prize of Rs 60,000 and Sohail Shahzad received the losing finalists consolation prize of Rs 35,000. Umair Alam, who had recorded the highest break of 128 in the 32-player championship, was given Rs 5,000.
