Sammer tops HEC squash trials

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan number 1 female squash player Sammer Anjum topped trial matches conducted by the HEC at Mushaf Mir Squash Complex for the selection of Pakistan squad for the World University Squash Championship set to be held in Chennai, India from September 1 to 7.
While talking to The Nation on Sunday Sammer said it was like a dream come true as she really wanted to represent her university in World University Squash Championship. “Last time Pakistan didn't sent team for the World University Squash Championship, but this time HEC decides in favour of sending the 3-member female and 5-member male team for the prestigious event. It is a golden opportunity for us to display our abilities against the best university players. I am quite confident despite the fact I am complete unaware to whom against we would play, how are the other world university players and teams, but one thing that went in our favour is we know our strengths and weaknesses.”
Sammer said she was quite blessed as she had represented Pakistan in international events and that experience would certainly help her a great deal. She said that recent training camp it would be an added for her in the upcoming event.
About preparations for the upcoming Asian Games Sammer said she was busy in preparing for the University trials that's why she couldn't attend the first phase of the camp but now she was totally free and ready to attend the camp. She termes Pakistan team balanced for the Asian Senior Team Championship and hoped that the federation would retain the same combination for the Asian Games.
“As far as our chances in the Asian Games are concerned, I must accept the competition would be very tough as the best players from entire Asia would compete for the top honours, but our chances are quite bright. We are now playing as unit for the past several months. We have developed good understanding.”
