IPC throws in the towel in POA tussle

ISLAMABAD - Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) Minister Syed Riaz Hussain Pirzada decided to follow the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s instructions to send the teams recognised by the IOC-approved Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) to take part in the Asian Games as well as all the other IOC recognized events.
The inside sources confirmed to The Nation that the decision was taken in the larger interest of the country during the 74th Executive Committee meeting of Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) held here at a local hotel under the chair of the IPC Minister on Wednesday. The meeting was also attended by IPC Secretary M Ejaz Chaudhry, Additional Secretary Amir Tariq Zaman, DG PSB Dr Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera, legal advisor Irfan Ullah Khan, Director Sports Board Punjab (SBP) Jaleel Ahmed Chauhan and the Finance Advisor IPC Ministry.
The meeting was conveyed one-point agenda to approve budget with one condition and for this purpose, an administrative committee was formed which will meet on April 3 at 10am to finalize administrative expenditures. The committee is authorized to finalise recommendations which doesn’t require executive committee approval. The sources added that the minutes were sent for approval and as soon as they are approved by the executive committee, funds of the affiliated federations will be released immediately.
A total of Rs 963.73 million was allocated in the annual budget, but Rs 166.58 million was deducted from the amount. Now the PSB will get Rs 797.15 million out of which the board has already received Rs 558.01 million.
The meeting further decided that there would be no discrimination with the affiliated federations either they were supporting Gen Arif or Gen Sahi but they also must have followed 2005 Sports Policy in true letter and spirit.
The IPC Minister and Secretary also directed the PHF to contact the IOC-backed POA to participate in the Asian Games. It was also decided to upgrade all the PSB amenities to provide every athlete international standard facilities. It was also decided that executive committee meeting would be held every year in the month of July, as it makes no sense of conducting meetings just before the expiry period. The proposed Prime Minister’s talent hunt inter-provincial scheme was also approved and the scheduled would be shortly announced.
