LONDON - Glamorgan have signed West Indies all-rounder Darren Sammy to play in English county cricket's Twenty20 Blast tournament, the club announced Tuesday. Former West Indies captain Sammy is set to head straight to Welsh county Glamorgan's Cardiff base from the Indian Premier League in time for their first home match of the Blast campaign against unbeaten Sussex on Friday.
He will stay with Glamorgan, who although a Welsh side play in all of England's senior county competitions, until the start of the Caribbean Premier League, another domestic Twenty20 event. Sammy is renowned as a powerful Twenty20 batsman, a useful seamer and fine close catcher. "Darren's skills with bat and ball have delighted crowds all around the world in Twenty20 competitions in recent years, so we're delighted to welcome him to Glamorgan," said Glamorgan chief executive and director of cricket Hugh Morris.
"He arrives fresh from the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise in the Indian Premier League, whom he captained," the former England batsman added. Glamorgan coach Toby Radford, who previously worked with Sammy when an assistant coach with the West Indies, said: "Darren is a top quality T20 player and a fine addition to our dressing room, because he brings with him experience at the highest level. Darren was a leader on and off the field during my days with the West Indies, so it will be great to work with him again at Glamorgan."
