Australia in command against West Indies

BRISBANE - Ricky Ponting may be forced to review his no follow-on policy on Saturday after Australia's new generation pace attack ripped through the outclassed West Indies at the Gabba. Mitchell Johnson (2-45) led the way as Ponting's young quicks reduced the tourists to 134-5 at stumps on Friday, still 346 behind the home side's 480-8 declared. The Windies top-order collapsed from 0-49 to 4-63 in a matter of five overs after tea as they failed to handle the pace and bounce of Johnson, Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle. Allrounder Shane Watson also chipped in with the scalp of former Queensland teammate Brendan Nash (18) while Ponting dropped the unbeaten Travis Dowlin when he was seven. With three days remaining, the Windies are in dire straits with a feeble tail ripe for the picking once third-Test scrapper Dowlin (40no) or wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin (22no) is dislodged. The follow-on target of 280 looks far beyond them and, although Ponting has always shown a penchant to rest his bowlers, he would smell blood and be tempted to go for a quick kill. With injured spearhead Jerome Taylor (hip) joining key batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan on the sidelines, the Windies problematic tour sank deeper into trouble at the Gabba. Dropped catches once again hurt with substitute fielder Darren Sammy dropping tailender Nathan Hauritz in the slips on five before he went on to become the fifth Australian to notch a half-century. They weren't helped by the new umpire referral system - and rightly so - as both skipper Chris Gayle (31) and batting linchpin Shivnarine Chanderpaul (2) challenged leg-before verdicts and wasted their team's two referrals in the process. Dwayne Bravo (0) was also sent on his way via technology after Watson claimed an edged catch at third slip that appeared to just carry off Johnson. Gayle had slashed his way to 24 off his first 14 balls as he felt attack was the best form of defence after Australia's middle-session declaration, including three off-side boundaries off his first eight balls. Debutant opening partner Adrian Barath was also enterprising before Johnson chimed in to have the first of two wickets caught at third slip by Watson.
