Federal Schools Girls Games start

ISLAMABAD – The ‘Federal Schools Girls Games Islamabad 2014’ were inaugurated here at the Pakistan Sports Complex on Monday. Federal Minister for IT Anusha Rehman and Federal Minister for IPC Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada were the chief guests on the occasion and inaugurated the games. Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) Islamabad were jointly organising these games which were being participated by more than 10,000 female students in the competitions of badminton, table tennis, volleyball and athletics. Both the ministers lauded the efforts of the Pakistan Sports Board, Ministry of IPC and Ministry of CADD in this regard and stressed upon the promotion of sports and recreational activities for the youth and particularly for females.–Staff Reporter

Trials held to hunt hockey talent
LAHORE – The two-day open trials to select the talented players from the Punjab province were held here at Johar Hockey Stadium, Johar Town on Monday and at National Hockey Stadium Pitch No 2 on Sunday. The trials were observed by the PHF national selection committee comprising Olympian Islahuddin Siddiqui (chairman), Arshad Ali Ch, Ayaz Mahmood, Khalid Bashir, Musaddiq Hussain (members) while Olympian Shahnaz Sheikh (chief coach Pakistan senior hockey team) and PHF secretary Rana Mujahid Ali also observed the performances of the players. Total 160 boys appeared for the trials. To pick the talented players from the province of KPK, the trials will be conducted by the national selection committee at Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium Peshawar today (Tuesday).–Staff Reporter

Revival of squash top priority: Riaz
ISLAMABAD - Squash champion Aamir Atlas Khan, along with his brother Danish Atlas Khan and head coach Jamshed Gul Khan, met with Inter Provincial Coordination (IPC) Minister Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada at his office on Monday. Aamir briefed the minister about the issues and challenges being faced by the squash players. He also apprised the minister about not a single word of appreciation he received from either President or Prime Minister despite winning Asian title after a gap of almost 15 years. Riaz assured him that ministry of IPC was well aware of the situation and was committed to provide all resources to support sports in Pakistan. “Revival of squash is our top most priority and I appreciate the efforts of Aamir for winning Asian title at the time when it needed the most.–Staff Reporter

KCW win Inter-collegiate Girls C’ships
Lahore – Kinnaird College for Women (KCW) has won Inter-collegiate Girls Championships 2013-14 by winning all its competitions played here at various venues of the city. Kinnaird College defeated Baghbanpura College by 3-1 to clinch the hockey title. Maida Alam, Kirsam Anees and Qurat-ul Ain Waheed played superb hockey for Kinnaird College and guided their team to impressive 3-1 victory. In badminton event played here at GCU Badminton Hall, six teams participated in it while Kinnaird College outclassed Lahore College in the final to clinch the title. Earlier in semi-finals, Kinnaird College beat Samnabad College. The table tennis event was played at GCU Badminton Hall and this title also went to Kinaird College who faced some resistance from Lahore College before winning the title.–Staff Reporter

Lodhi beat Shahzad in National Chess
LAHORE - Defending champion and International Master (IM) Mahmood Lodhi beat Shahzad Mirza in an exciting game on the third day of the 29th National Chess Championship here at the SISSA Hall on Monday. Although Lodhi got better of Shahzad Mirza, he is mesmerizing the spectators with his form as he is defeating all other rivals and prominent young players. In other notable games of the day, Ahmad Ali (Lahore) drew with Anwar Qureshi (Hyderabad), M Younis (Karachi) beat Ahmad Awais (Gujranwala), Fauzan Ullah (Lahore) lost to Waseem Gul (Sargodha), Mudassar Iqbal (Multan) beat M Ayub (Gujranwala) and M Zahid (Lahore) beat Tariq Hassan (Karachi). Two rounds are being played daily and championship will go on till April 30 when the final standings will be announced.–Staff Reporter
