Bowlers bowled brilliantly and Hashim Amla scored an effortless half-century to take South Africa to a convincing 8-wicket consolation win over defending champions Sri Lanka in the World Twenty20 match at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi on Monday.
Quinton de Kock was not able to contribute much, getting run out by Tillakaratne Dilshan for 9 off 6 balls with 2 boundaries. Faf du Plessis scored an easy-paced 31 to help the Proteas get to the total, but was out LBW to Suranga Lakmal. AB de Villiers played a couple of big hits at the end as South Africa cantered home with 8 wickets in the bag. With this win South Africa stay at No. 3 on the points table with 4 points, just ahead of Sri Lanka with 2. Of course, the match was ultimately inconsequential given that England and West Indies had already qualified.
Amla became the third South African batsman after du Plessis and de Villiers to score 1,000 T20I runs in the course of his innings. It was not a particularly swift innings, but with a target of merely 121 the Proteas had enough time to toy with the bowling. Amla played a few of his trademark silken shots, hitting 4 fours and 1 six. Sri Lanka were never really in the hunt after that batting performance, and the bowlers never looked in the least bit threatening. De Villiers finished the match with a six as South Africa pulled off a consolation 8-wicket win.
Earlier, South Africa put in an all-round bowling display to clean out Sri Lanka for 120. Sri Lanka finally managed to get off to a good start, with Dinesh Chandimal and Tillakaratne Dilshan looking good at the start of the innings. The pair added 45 runs for the first wicket in less than 5 overs before Chandimal was bowled by Aaron Phangiso. Lahiru Thirimanne, Sri Lanka’s proxy Kumar Sangakkara, walked in at No. 3 and survived all of 1 ball before walking back. Phangiso was on a hat-trick and Sri Lanka’s flying start was suddenly void.
Milinda Siriwardana came in next, and looked fluent from the start. He hit 2 fours and just as he was looking dangerous he was run out following a terrible mix-up with Dilshan. Shehan Jayasuriya played an innocuous nothing shot off Farhaan Behardien right into the hands of Faf du Plessis, getting out for 1 as Sri Lanka slipped to 78 for 4.
Dilshan was standing tall amid the rubble at the other end. He had statrted well but the constant wickets made him go into a shell. Perhaps that frustration led him to play some needless shots, but after surviving an LBW appeal against Behardien, he was struck plumb in front next ball. His 36 had come off 40 balls, and had included 4 fours and 1 six.
Chamara Kapugedara was bowled by an Imran Tahir googly for 4 off 7 balls, and Thisara Perera hit Dale Steyn to Behardien for 8. Dasun Shanaka took the toal past 100, but not by much. Rangana Herath edged Kyle Abbott behind to Quinton de Kock, and Jeffery Vandersay was bowled by Kyle Abbott for 3 off 7 balls. Suranga Lakmal was run out first ball, as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 120. Shanaka remained unbeaten on 20.
