Australia to chase 187 for victory against New Zealand

ADELAIDE: Josh Hazlewood stepped up in the absence of injured Mitch Starc, snaring six wickets to lead an Australian attack that dismissed New Zealand for 208 on Sunday and set a target of 187 for victory in the first day-night cricket test. New Zealand added 92 runs for the loss of five wickets in the first two-hour session on day three, continuing the dominance of ball over bat, a rarity at the Adelaide Oval.

After resuming at 116-5, a lead of 94 runs, the New Zealanders didn't add to the total before B.J. Watling (7) edged Hazlewood to second slip, where Steve Smith held a catch.

Hazlewood picked up his third career five-wicket haul — and the honor of the first ever in a day-night test with the pink ball — when he had Mark Craig (15) caught behind as New Zealand slipped to 140-7.

Mitchell Santner batted well beyond his experience in his first test, scoring 45 from 88 balls before a rush of blood cost him his wicket, stepping down to offspinner Nathan Lyon and getting stumped by Peter Nevill.

Australian allrounder Mitchell Marsh (3-59) returned to dismiss Tim Southee (13), who pulled a shorter ball out toward the boundary at deep backward square and was well caught just inside the rope by Lyon.

Hazlewood finished off the New Zealand innings when he bowled No. 11 Trent Boult minutes before the scheduled tea interval, returning a career-best 6-70 in his 12th test.

The 24-year-old Hazlewood had to take over as pace spearhead in the second innings after Starc injured his foot on Friday, preventing him from bowling or fielding from the remainder of the match.

Starc was playing his first test as the leader of the attack after veteran fast bowler Mitchell Johnson retired from international cricket last week.

Scoring in Adelaide has been unusually difficult for the batsmen, perhaps because of the experimental pink ball, leaving a potentially tricky run-chase for Australia.

New Zealand needs a win to square the series after Australia won the first test in Brisbane by 208 runs and the second test in Perth resulted in a high-scoring draw.
