Zaka to seek Imrans advice

LAHORE - Pakistan Cricket Boards (PCB) new chairman Zaka Ashraf has said that he will soon meet with former legend cricketers starting with Imran Khan to discuss how to improve Pakistan cricket at domestic and international level. Zaka, who took charge as a new PCB chief on Friday at the board's headquarters at Gaddafi Stadium, said: "I want to develop consensus on how to move forward after meeting with legends and after October 30, I will meet legend cricketer-turned-politician Imran to discuss how to improve Pakistan domestic and international cricket." Ashraf said he needed at least two to three months to settle down and study the working of the PCB. "I need about two to three months to settle down and study the system before making any decisions accordingly," he said and added: "My first priority will be to restore the country's reputation following a slew of damaging fixing allegations and discipline problems." He believed that former captain Shahid Afridi was a good one-day player. "As a Pakistani and cricket fan I think Afridi, who recently came out of retirement, is a very good one-day player but I would like to have experts' opinion in this regard then any final decision about him will be made. Afridi has requested to meet me and I will meet him as well as many other cricketers as I am a listener and will listen to all of them and then will decide what will be the best for the country and cricket." He further said that though he might not be a cricket expert yet he was an honest man with a good record of governance at Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) which he headed prior to taking over the board. "President Asif Ali Zardari is my good friend and I am proud of our friendship. Zardari is a mandatory president and he selected me as a new PCB chief so we have to respect his decision," he asserted. "I am honest and expect to handle the crisis. I have a respectable record while with ZTBL. I actually wasn't a banker before taking over ZTBL, only a corporate and business person who believes in discipline," he said and added: "Before my taking over the charge as ZTBL head, the bank was in loss of six billion but due to my dedication and hard work as an honest man and with the assistance of my dedicated staff, the bank is now in profit of 2.5 to 3 billion which is a great proof of handling the matters of any organisation successfully as a head." Ashraf said he would also improve Pakistan's domestic cricket and academies. He believes there was plenty of talent in Pakistan and intended to find it. "Our country is full of talent but the problem is to explore it in a transparent way. I have plans to activate academies and with the help of experts and selectors will surely explore talent." Ashraf appreciated the role of the city's media and termed them cooperative and friendly. "I am very happy to come to Lahore and also feel very glad to meet the media persons of the city. The PCB now has to play its important role for the betterment of cricket and in this regard, all the board officials and players have to work together and raise the standard of Pakistan cricket across the world," Ashraf concluded. Meanwhile, Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) president Qasim Zia also called on the new PCB chief. During his meeting with PCB chief, the PHF president felicitated Zaka on assumption of office of PCB chairman and discussed the matters relating sports.
