KARACHI Title holder Muhammad Munir and Shabbir Iqbal displayed poor play in the opening round of the three-day-54-hole Independence Day Cup Open Golf when they finished with three-over-75 in the first round here at the rain-saturated DHA Golf Course on Friday. Leading a pack of over 100 professionals, who are in the race of top prize in the Rs one million championship, are Amjad Yousuf, Ansar Mahmood and Muhammad Nazir. They finished the round with two-under-70 each. The flights on the opening morning left under mild drizzle but later in the day, the sky cleared and the entire course located on Korangi Creek basked in hot blazing sunlight. Both Munir and particularly Shabbir, who recently won the CNS and the Byco Sindh Open in tandem, could not display their true form. The fairways against the expectations behaved well but the greens were on the slower side. The two possibly could not adjust to pace of the greens and lost a number of putting chances. Fida Hussain with par-72 was lying behind the three leaders. Waheed Baloch logged one over-73 and Afsar Ali was two-over-74 at the end of the round. With sun brightly shining, the course would dry when the second round begin on Saturday. Better scores are expected in second round. The organisers of the event were contacted repeatedly with the request for providing official scores but not provided. The scores of the day were collected through contacting couple of professionals who are appearing in the championships. Seven subsidiary events were held on Thursday but no results were issued to the media though a number of calls were made to the concerned club officials. Golf officials at Karachi Golf Club and Arabian Sea Country Club, two big golfing clubs which annually hold a number of big events, are more co-operative and voluntarily provide detailed scores daily whenever they hold national events.
