Reading is an activity that, nowadays, not most children like to do. In the past children played games outdoor, read books and other fun activities but now ,with the invention of television and technology advancement, they are too busy in their own ‘Online World’. Not only the children but their parents also think that playing games online and doing other stuff on the internet or their own device is good for the children. However, it really isn’t. Children should spend their time reading more and more as it is very vital in the growing years of one’s life.
Firstly, it enhances the vocabulary. Reading makes us more articulate and well-spoken. It is of great help in the future as it helps in every profession and boosts confidence and self-esteem. It could aid in their professional lives as being well-spoken, confident, well-read and knowledgeable increases the chances of promotions.
Then comes knowledge. Reading fills our head with enormous amount of knowledge. When we have more knowledge, it eventually becomes easier for us to tackle with difficult situations and face obstacles. At the end of the paragraph, here’s this quote from an article I read, “Should you ever find yourself in dire circumstances, remember that although you might lose everything else–your job, your possessions, your money, even your health-knowledge can never be taken from you.”
Reading also improves focus and concentration skills. The more you are into reading, the more you become focused and concentrated. When we read, our mind is fixed on the book, its settings, its characters etc. Plus, here’s a tip; we should read a book before going to school, or on the way (If your house is a bit far from your school) and you’ll stay much more concentrated the whole day at school.
This point is for the people who think somewhat like this… ‘Reading! Oh what a boring activity.’ Please excuse me but reading is actually a free entertainment. You can just go to your local library and borrow books on almost any topic. Libraries have hundreds and thousands of great books and the best part is that they always keep upgrading their books, so you never get bored. If somehow you don’t have a local library, you always have internet right. If children can play games on the internet, they can also search for e-Books and read millions of books and novels on PDFs and ePubs.
I would like to end the article with a quote of Roald Dahl’s famous novel-Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (The Oompa Loompa’s Song)
“So PLEASE, oh please we beg, we pray
Go throw your T.V set away.
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.”
