LAHORE – Unidentified motorcyclists on Sunday night shot dead a groom and wounded his sister and brother-in-law just hours before his wedding ceremony near the Lahore Press Club at Shimla Hill in the Qila Gujjar Singh area, police said.

The deceased, identified as Haroon Butt, was on his way to a beauty saloon when gunmen riding on a motorcycle intercepted the car near the Press Club. The gunmen opened straight fire at the bridegroom and his relatives, and then escaped from the crime scene.

An eyewitness told the investigators that the faces of gunmen were unseen as were wearing helmets. “The killers shot the groom six times and fled away.”

The sister and brother-in-law of Haroon Butt also sustained multiple bullet wounds and were rushed to the Services hospital immediately. The resident of Habib Ullah Road, Haroon Butt, was later pronounced as dead. The traumatised family members of the deceased began smashing their heads with the walls at their residence as they came to know his sudden death.

Many emotional scenes were witnessed outside the residence of the deceased, where the relatives and family members of the youth, clad in colourful dresses, were seen screaming and crying over the brutal killing.

The condition of sister and brother-in-law of Haroon was also stated to be critical at the hospital. The police removed the body to the morgue for autopsy. The police were unable to ascertain the motives behind brutal gun assault as the investigators were at the crime scene till filing of this report. No case was registered till midnight.

SHO releases most-wanted criminal: A departmental inquiry is underway against the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Nawab Town police station for releasing a most-wanted criminal after accepting huge bribe from the accused, police sources said on Sunday.

Sources said that Inspector Qamar Sajid arrested a most-wanted proclaimed offender, Nasir alias Kashif, who was wanted to the Kasur district police in several cases of crimes including drug-peddling. The police also recovered huge quantity of chars from his possession.

Two days ago, police sources claimed, the SHO released the most-wanted criminal after accepting millions of rupees in bribe. On the orders of the SP Sadar police division, Adeel Chandio, the DSP Chuhng has launched an inquiry to probe into the allegation.

Police sources further revealed that the police official was found guilty during the inquiry. However, no action was taken against him so far.
