KARACHI  - PR - The annual meeting of the APNS General Council has elected the Executive Committee for the year 2014-15.

The executive committee was elected in a meeting held at the APNS House, Karachi on Monday.

It unanimously elected Hameed Haroon as president, Jamil Ather as senior vice president, Umer Mujib Shami as vice president, Sarmad Ali as secretary general, Munir Jilani as joint secretary and Waseem Ahmed as finance secretary.

The meeting held under the chairmanship of Sarmad Ali, president for the year 2013-14, unanimously approved the report of the Executive Committee for the preceding year as well as the annual accounts of the society.

The members at the General Council expressed concern on the non-payment of dues by the Sindh Information Department for long which has caused acute financial crunch to Sindh-based publications. The members also expressed concern over the non-observation of 25 percent quota for regional publications in release of government advertisements. The members observed that the Ad Distribution Policy of the Sindh Information Department was not equitable and was not according to the laid down policy of releasing advertisement to the genuine regional publications. The General Council also decided to hold a periodical convention in Islamabad in near future.

The General Council, attended by 148 members from across the country, formed an Election Commission headed by Younus Riaz, Nasir Daad Baloch and Hafeez Malik as members. The Election Commission conducted the election of the Executive Committee for the year 2014-15. Following were elected unopposed.

Lahore Daily Seats: Sarmad Ali (Daily Jang), Hameed Haroon (Daily Dawn), Imtinan Shahid (Daily Khabrain). Rameeza Majid Nizami (Daily Nawa-i-Waqt), Umer Mujib Shami (Daily Pakistan) and Daily Pakistan Today.

Balochistan Daily Seats: Waseem Ahmed (Daily Awam Quetta), Syed Rashid Obaid (Daily Balochistan Times, Quetta)

Pakhtoonkhwa Daily Seat: Ayaz Badshah (Daily Mashriq Peshawar), Pir Sufaid Shah Hamdard (Daily Wahdat Peshawar).

Sindh excluding Daily Karachi: Javed Mehr Shamsi (Daily Kaleem Sukkur), Muhammad Aslam Kazi (Daily Kawish Hyderabad).

Punjab (excluding Lahore/Rawalpindi/Islamabad): Mumtaz Tahir (Daily Aftab Multan), Humayon Tariq (Daily Business Report Faisalabad) Munir Jilani (Daily Paigham, Faisalabad).

General Seats (Metropolitan Dailies): Aijazul Haq (Daily Express, Karachi), Faisal Zahid Malik (Daily Pakistan Observer, Islamabad).

Periodical Seats; Aamer Mahmood (Monthly Kiran Digest, Karachi), Mushtaq Qureshi (Monthly Naey Ufaq Karachi), Sardar Khan Niazi (Monthly Naya Rukh Karachi) and Dr Waqar Yousuf Azeemi (Monthly Roohani Digest, Karachi).

News and News Comments periodicals (Punjab/KPK): Rehmat Ali Raazi (Weekly Azm, Lahore). News and News Comments (Sindh/Balochistan): Kazi Asad Abid (Fortnightly Ibrat Hyderabad). News and News Comments Periodicals (General), Riaz Mansoori (Monthly Cricketer, Karachi).

Karachi Daily Seats: Anwar Farooqi (Daily Karachi), Dr Jabbar Khattak (Daily Awami Awaz), Arshad Zuberi (Daily Business Recorder), Mukhtar Aqil (Daily Jurat), Najamuddin Sheikh (Daily Deyanat) and Ilyas Shakir (Daily Qaumi Akhbar).

Rawalpindi/Islamabad Daily Seats: Mehtab Khan (Daily Ausaf) Islamabad, Khushnood Ali Khan (Daily Sahafat) Islamabad. General Seats Regional Dailies: Humayon Gulzar (Daily Sayadat Bahawalpur), Jamil Ather (Daily Tijarat Gujranwala). The president-elect nominated Fauzia Shaheen (Monthly Dastak, Karachi) on woman publisher seat.

Reporter from Lahore adds: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif congratulated newly-elected APNS president Hameed Haroon, general secretary Sarmad Ali and other office-bearers.  In a statement, the CM expressed hope that the newly-elected office-bearers would continue to play their due role for the promotion of constructive journalism in the country.
