LAHORE  - National Industrial Relations Commission (NIRC) has announced to hold referendum in PIA employees unions despite the fact that current CBA Peoples Unity of PIA employees was lawfully authorised to hold the office one year more, sources in the national flag carrier said.
Under Industrial Relations Act (IRA) 2012 clause 19 “If any trade Union and (CBA) have membership of over 5000 employees they can get one year more CBA certificate”.  So peoples Unity CBA whose two years tenure has been ended on March 17, 2014 is entitled as per law to continue for one more year, simply because it has 7000 members, said President of CBA, Sajid Gujjar while talking to The Nation here on Monday. He said that General Manager, IR has issued certificate of 5700 members to Peoples Unity in January 2012, while a certificate of 6500 members was issued on February 2012 and finally GM IR issued certificate of 7000 members in February 2014.
President CBA said that Peoples Unity submitted an application to Chairman NIRC on March 14, 2014 seeking extension of one year on the basis of membership strength and under the cover of IR Act 2012 clause 19, but chairman made no decision in this regard. In the meanwhile Air League of PIA employees submitted an application on March 21, 2014 seeking holding of referendum in PIA. On which a member NIRC, Nasrullah Dreshak on March 24, not only issued orders to hold referendum in PIA but also withdrew facilities given to Peoples Unity office bearers. , Peoples Unity filed an appeal to the chairman NIRC who fixed April 03, 2014 as hearing date. In the meanwhile Peoples Unity filed a writ petition in Lahore High Court against the decision of members NIRC. As per President Peoples Unity Lahore High Court has issued notices to MD, PIA, Director Administration PIA and Registrar, NIRC and sough reply from all of them over the issue.
When contacted president Air League of PIA employees, Ahmad Butt said that two years tenure of Peoples Unity has been ended on March 17, 2014 and unity deserves no more to continue. He said that membership of the unity is fake since their activists burnt the real membership forms in Karachi.
A senior officer of PIA seeking anonymity said that in fact higher management of PIA was planning to form such a CBA which could not resist before the privatisation plan of Pakistan government. For that purpose Air League was being backed by the government to come forward and serve the agenda of government, however Ahamd refuted any such planning.
