According to news reports, Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan approved a multi-billion package for the socioeconomic uplift of Gilgit Baltistan. The sources believe that the uplift package for the region would envisage infrastructure, road, electricity projects, environment protection and tourism promotion. However, the details of the development plan will be unveiled during PM Khan’s visit to the area.

If the state puts the area on top of its priority list and equips it with essential services and infrastructure, GB can stand to become a big economic boon for all of Pakistan alongside the area’s locals. The region is ideal for laying a web of economic and infrastructural investments. All of GB is blessed with nature’s beauty. The literacy rate is high. With minor assistance from the government, these people can turn their region into a booming economic hub. If the government can develop the above-stated sectors, the locals will not only experience inclusion in the national ambit; they will enjoy economic empowerment as well.

Undoubtedly the area attracts a large number of tourists, local as well as foreign, every year. However, the tourism industry in GB is below par. The government must chalk out a detailed capacity building plan to make the tourism industry stand on its feet in the area. Similarly, GB is known for its fruit orchards. The authorities must also consider it a sector that can earn significant revenue for the state and people. Processing and packaging units are missing in the area. Likewise, improving the skills of people associated with GB’s cottage industry can also play a decisive role in poverty alleviation.

While the development package can do wonders for the region, the sad reality is that climate change is affecting the area in unimaginable ways. Therefore, conducting proper environmental feasibility studies and including provisions in all plans to safeguard the environment must be prioritised to ensure the region does not lose its special features and natural beauty.
