129kg drugs seized, 173 suspects held in operations

Peshawar - Peshawar Police foiled a smuggling bid by recovering 60kg opium and 40kg charas from a vehicle while Khyber police recovered 13kg crystal meth (ice) and 16kg heroin in a separate operation.

An official said that following a tip off, the police began monitoring the entrance points from Khyber district into Peshawar district on Thursday.

The cops from Sarband Police Station flagged down a motorcar but driver sped away. The police chased the car and later intercepted it. One drug trafficker identified as Hikmat Jan was arrested from the vehicle and 60kg opium and 40kg charas were also recovered from it.

In another operation conducted under the Peshawar region police, the cops recovered 16kg heroin and 13kg ice drug and also arrested 173 suspects for further investigations. The operation in Khyber district was jointly conducted by Pakistan Army, Frontier Corps and police.

The official said the police searched 380 houses and also recovered 13 AK-47 rifles, 20 pistols, 6 bore rifles, one repeater, 46 magazines and hundreds of bullets.

Capital City Police Officer Ijaz Khan, who heads both Peshawar and Khyber districts’ police, said that efforts were underway to further improve human intelligence and also to involve local elders in various areas to eliminate drugs and fight crime.

SSP Operation Haroon Rasheed said that search and strike operations were also being conducted on a daily basis to ensure law and order and peace.

The incumbent IGP Moazzam Jah Ansari, soon after taking charge, established narcotics eradication teams in all districts of the province to curb drug smuggling.

Speaking to The Nation, Inspector General of Police Moazzam Jah Ansari said that the force had been directed to go after criminals, particularly drug mafia, as the menace can endanger the future generations.

“Our drive continues against all narcotics, their manufacturers, dealers and peddlers. We resolve to make the society drug free and will come with iron hand against all such criminals who try to make our youth addicts,” he added.
