ISLAMABAD - PPP’s top leadership has decided to postpone reorganization in South Punjab and central Punjab following arguments raised by some party leaders to merge South Punjab chapter into Punjab’s main body on the pretext that the party had failed to win even a single seat in southern belt of the province in the 2013 general elections.
PPP, the major opposition party, is in a quandary to finalize its restructuring at Central Punjab as internal bickering and grouping for winning top slots for cronies by PPP stalwarts have caused delay in the reorganization process, The Nation has learnt reliably.
The top PPP leadership is interested in overall restructuring in the party soon after Eid-Ul-Fitr, but the party’s vice chairman’s Yusuf Raza Gilani’s recent solo flight has further developed cracks and led to postponement of reorganization.
The sources said the matter of replacing Punjab President Manzoor Wattoo with Qamar Zaman Kaira has also been delayed due to verbal support of Kaira to Gilani’s recent statement that former president General (R) Pervez Musharraf had resigned after certain promises were made.
Earlier, troika of senior party leaders including Vice-Chairman Yusuf Raza Gilani, Additional Secretary General Mian Raza Rabani, Central President Women Wing Faryal Talpur had held a meeting in Islamabad to give final touches about the party’s reconstruction specially at Southern Punjab and overall as well.
They had discussed in length the reorganization plan in order to re-emerge on political arena after its defeat in the elections.
The sources said that the party members also deliberated to separate Southern Punjab chapter from Central Punjab.
When contacted, Gilani confirmed the meeting saying, “Yes, the reorganization plan was discussed in the meeting.”
Another senior leader said restructuring in the party has been delayed due to Imran Khan’s Azadi March, as PPP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) would hold a meeting after 15 August to deliberate this matter in length.
“Mist would clear after 14th August and a strategy would be evolved about reconstruction in the party,” the PPP leader said.
When contacted, Secretary General PPP Latif Khosa said that the party’s reorganization would not be carried out soon after after Eid. “Lot of things are going on including Azadi march, operation Zarb-e-Azab, so the party will mull over restructuring after the mist gets clear,” he added.
To a question about PPP’s Patron-in-Chief Bilawal Bhutto’s visit for reorganization of the party in Punjab, Khosa said his visit has still not been scheduled.
It is relevant here that Bilawal’s has thrice postponed his visit to Punjab due to different reasons.
