MMA agrees to become part of parliament

ISLAMABAD : Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal Tuesday accepted the proposal of Jamaat-i-Islami to become part of the upcoming federal and provincial legislatures but once again reiterated its stance that PTI’s emergence as the single largest party is a result of massive rigging.

Talking to media after the MMA meeting which remained in session for two days, MMA chief Fazlur Rehman grilled PTI for talking about forming a government and announcing even its cabinet members when they are yet to attain simple majority in the National Assembly.

To a question, he dispelled the impression of any division in the religious parties’ alliance and the difference of opinion among the leadership could not be taken as division as all the matters were resolved with consensus and the MMA leadership was united.

Fazl, who is also chief of his own faction of Jamiat-i-Ulema-i-Islam, also rejected the ECP claim that all parties were provided a level-playing field in the elections and once again demanded resignation of Chief Election Commissioner and members of the commission.

The JUI-F chief said “blatant rigging” has paved the way for the PTI victory in the elections. He demanded of Election Commission to reopen each and every constituency so that the true picture could come before the people of Pakistan whose mandate has been stolen. Criticising the post-elections role of the PTI, the JUI-F chief said Imran and his so-called comrades who claimed to be the symbol of change were engaged in worst sort of horse-trading in the country’s history to convert their minority into majority. He said that the final decision on joining the Parliament would be made in consultation with other political parties on the platform of All Parties Conference.

He, however, said that they have directed the MMA provincial chapters to organise a protest programme against the massive rigging in the elections and this programme would be altered after the final word on the future protest plan to be finalised at the joint meeting of all stakeholders in all parties’ conference.

Responding to a question, he stated that the statement of Army Chief required clarification wherein he was quoted as saying that enemies of the country were defeated through votes in the elections. He further said that his statement further become controversial when US stated that extremist religious elements in Pakistan were voted out by the people, so he (army chief) should explain his position regarding his statement.

He said that coalition of religio-political parties vehemently denies the ECP claim that the elections were free and transparent.

He said the ECP should not continue to argue over the subject. “The nation will not accept a government formed as a result of horse-trading,” said the MMA chief.
