President Barack Obama discussed news Afghan strategy with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Obama held a lengthy video conference call to discuss the new U.S. strategy with Karzai. The presidential palace in Kabul said in a statement that the hour-long video conference occurred Tuesday morning hours ahead of Obama's evening speech in New York in which he will outline a new U.S. plan and dispatch up to 35,000 more American troops to Afghanistan. Karzai's office says the two leaders discussed in detail the security, political, military and economic aspects of the strategy.
