KARACHI  - Activists on Friday drew attention of the concerned authorities towards large number of pending cases of sexual violence in court. Sana Rasheed, the spokesperson of War Against Rape (WAR), Karachi, has specifically appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take action on this issue.

She, on the occasion, referred to a case of criminal assault and murder of a six year old child Taj who was subjected to the crime in 2006, however, due to cumbersome procedure the accused could be pronounced guilty after six long years.

“Unfortunately, due to the long duration that this case has been pending in courts, father of the victim child, Barkat Shah, who was the complainant in the FIR, and adamant to bring his daughter’s culprits to justice, passed away in 2009.” said the activist. Districts and Sessions Judge Nadeem Ahmed Khan, pronounced the accused guilty and sentenced him to serve life imprisonment and pay Rs. 100 000 fine, on the count of Murder u/s 302 PPC; serve life imprisonment and pay a fine of 50 000/ fine, on the count of rape u/s 10 (2) RW 365-B PPC; serve imprisonment of 5 years and a fine of 10 000/-, on the count of kidnapping u/s 363 PPC.

“WAR hails its legal victory but at the same time want to remind that the abuse and murder case of five-year old girl, Taj, was reported in October 2006,” she said.

“This is also not an isolated incidence as numerous victims are still waiting for justice,” she said. Through the platform of WAR she also felicitated Advocate Farida Moten and Advocate Asia Muneer and Deputy District Public Prosecutor Muhammad Yunus for their tireless efforts.

It was in October 2006 Baby Taj was going to a shop near her house in Gulistan-e-Johar, when she was kidnapped by Muhammad Irshad, with the help of Wali Muhammad, both of whom lived in the same neighborhood.

The main accused, Irshad, took the child to an empty plot nearby, where he first assaulted and then brutally murdered her.

Taj’s body was found two days later, and in a deformed stage. The accused was identified with the help of Taj’s friend who knew that Irshad used to speak to Taj.
