LAHORE - PU Department of Gender Studies has organised a seminar on “Combating violence Through Awareness on Women’s Rights”. Secretary Punjab Women’s Development Department Iram Bukhari, Focal Person of SPO Bushra Ikhlaq and Assistant Prof Department of Gender Studies Dr Raana Malik were the speakers. The speakers highlighted the issue of violence against women in the contemporary socio-cultural settings of Pakistan. Irum said that Islam has given a very balanced and appropriate perspective on gender relations and gender roles. She said if we fully comprehend the spirit of Islam, the problem could be tackled down. She stated that the govt had taken several steps to safeguard women from violence and enhance their empowerment at all levels. She said that “Women’s Empowerment Package” announced by Punjab govt on March 8, 2012 showed its endorsement to women’s rights.

In a separate meeting, Secretary Punjab Women’s Development Department Iram Bukhari said that a compressive policy is being evolved regarding problems of the working women and their solution. She said that under Women Package 2012, performae have been sent to Commissioners, DCOs, Provincial Secretaries, IG Punjab, heads of all departments, RPOs, and DPOs for knowing women problems and their solution. She said that these performae will be returned back to Women Development Department within three days. She said that a monitoring cell headed by Deputy Director Saleem Yousuf has also been set up in Women Development Department. Irum Bukahri said that working women could also fax their proformae directly to her on fax number 042-35290579. She further said that women could also directly call her regarding solution of their problems.
