UN Anti-Slavery Day observed

MULTAN - The participants of a rally held in connection with UN Anti-Slavery Day demanded the government to strictly implement amendments to Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act 2012 and ensure effective implementation of Employee Social Security Ordinance 1965 to reduce Bonded Labour in Pakistan.
The rally was organised by the Society for Protection of Rights of Children (SPARC) with the support of action aid and European Union here on Friday. Hyacinth Peter Project Officer SPARC led the rally.
Talking to the journalists on this occasion, Hyacinth Peter said that at least 15000 brick kilns were functional Pakistan and almost 2250000 bonded labourers worked in this sector.
He further pointed bonded labour was also found in Agriculture sector, Bangle Industry, Carpet Industry, fisheries  and mines sectors.
He told the journalists that the whole families of bonded labourers working at a brick kiln were sold out to the owners of other kiln. He added that over the past few years, there had been a series of court cases in which the courts ordered the release of bonded brick kiln workers. He demanded the government to implement court orders strictly.
