LAHORE - Unknown motorcyclists Saturday gunned down PPP vice-president, Lahore chapter, Shahid Imtiaz, within Mughalpura Police precincts. The victim was going to his Shadipura residence on car along with his cousin, Malik Amir, when two unknown gunmen intercepted them near Wetman Road and opened fire. As a result, Shahid Imtiaz sustained bullet injuries on his chest and died on the way to hospital. Police said the motive behind the assassination was yet to be ascertained. After getting information of the incident, a large number of PPP workers reached the hospital besides relatives and friends of the deceased and protested against the incident. Father of three children, Malik Shahid Imtiaz, had contested as PPP candidate for PP-145 constituency in 2008 general election. He owned of some factories and mills. The assailants, who came on a motorcycle bearing no registration number, targeted Imtiaz when his vehicle slowed down to cross a speed breaker near the Railway quarters. "A bullet hit him in the chest while another one pierced into his heart, which ultimately proved fatal, doctors at the Shalimar Hospital" told newsmen. A police investigator said that the victim's family termed the killing of Shahid Imtiaz a conspiracy but refused to give further details in this regard. He believed that the deceased's family knew about the motives behind his murder that could lead the police to the alleged killers. When contacted, Mughalpura SHO, Qamar Abbas, said the police would investigate the incident keeping in view the property or money disputes as well. Meanwhile, police have registered a case under Sections 302, 109 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code against unidentified assailants on the complaint of late Imtiaz's brother-in-law Malik Azhar after sending the dead body to the city morgue for autopsy.
