LAHORE Over unexplained reasons, Inspector General of Police Javed Iqbal is tight-lipped and not moving to convince Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif to resolve the lingering issue of deduction in police salaries, well placed sources revealed on Monday. A deep frustration is spreading in the entire police department, one of the sources said. The informed sources believed the IGP was completely unfamiliar with the hurdles and problems of the Punjab police as earlier he only worked in Sindh and Islamabad. So far, he is even unable to understand the mindset of the Punjab police and if he could not realise the problems of his force soon then he may lose his command over his force, they said with fears. Despite the repeated reminders by bosses in the Punjab Police Welfare and Finance Department, including its head, Addl. IGP Aftab Sultan, IG Javed Iqbal is mute in raising this issue, they remarked. The sources claimed before the provincial government announced of giving 50 per cent raise in salaries of governmental officers/officials they were receiving 20 per cent special allowance of Central Police Office and 40 per cent of Special Branch Allowance. Moreover a former Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhary Pervaiz Elahi had also announced Rs 2000 special allowance for constables and head constables of Punjab Police, they added. According to their claims before the announcement of budget for the fiscal year 2010/2011, Mian Shahbaz Sharif had announced to give 50 percent raise in salaries of police officers on basic salaries but the provincial government deducted all the special allowances except giving Risk Allowance. The Punjab Government, however, raised 50 per cent salaries of all the governmental officials in the budget for the fiscal year (2010/2011) but exempted police department. Now every police officer mostly from low scales officers is facing huge resentment as he is in loss with this step of provincial government, they added. They however said police officers, who have been inducted within two to four years, are in benefit otherwise none of the police officer is happy with this stride. They demanded the IG Punjab to take an exemplary step by convincing Mian Shahbaz Sharif as soon as possible otherwise to restore all the previous allowances besides giving 50 percent increase announced for the fiscal year (2010/2011) on running basis for general governmental officials. However when contacted with (03214445652), the IG Punjab Javed Iqbal did not bother to respond despite the repeated requests by this scribe in order to seek his expert opinion in this regard. He however sent an SMS with a message Who r u but again did not reply when asked to comment on this issue. An analytical however says the provincial government is spending Rs 1.67 for the protection of each citizen on daily basis while the population of the Punjab has crossed 92 million. He urged the provincial government and the top bosses of Punjab police should initiate sincere efforts in order curb ever increasing crime rate.
