AN Indonesian pop star whose immoral tapes with his celebrity girlfriends have scorched the Internet has been jailed for three and a half years in a high-profile test of a controversial law. Nazril Ariel Irham, 30-year-old leader of the rock group Peterpan, was jailed under a 2008 pornography law, Reuters reports. As a public figure, the defendant should be aware that fans might imitate his behaviour, said Judge Singgih Budi in a west Javan court jammed with fans and critics, Vivanews.com reports. The pop star insists the tapes were stolen from his house and posted online without his knowledge, but the judge said Ariel did nothing to prevent their distribution on the Internet. The court crowd included teenage female Peterpan fans wearing T-shirts with the word freedom as well as hundreds of protesters who complained that the sentence was too easy. What is an issue here is not Ariel, but rights supporters versus morality enforcers. Tough choice: porn star or oppressors? said political commentator Witoelar on Twitter.USA Today
