ISLAMABAD - An appeal has been filed in the Supreme Court (SC) against the Islamabad High Courts (IHC) verdict that had dismissed a petition seeking quashing of FIR and trial against Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri in the case of assassination of Punjab governor Salman Taseer. The appeal was filed by Zafar Awan Advocate of Chakwal. A division bench of the IHC on January 26, 2011 had set aside an intra-court appeal filed by Awan seeking cancellation of the case against Mumtaz Qadri, the self-confessed killer of Taseer, primarily on technical grounds. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Iqbal Hameedur Rehman and Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan, maintained in its verdict that the appeal was not maintainable for hearing, as the appellant was not aggrieved in the case. The court upheld the January 20 verdict of its single bench comprising Justice Anwar Khan Kasi. Justice Kasi had rejected the petition of Awan, saying no citizen could be allowed or encouraged to take law into his own hands.
