KARACHI - A large number of Orangi Town residents set a wedding hall on fire after a minor girl was found dead from the water tank of the marriage hall here on Sunday.

According to details, six-year-old girl namely Pakiza, daughter of Faizur Rehman, went missing few days ago. She, along with her family, went to the hall to attend a wedding ceremony of their relatives on January 25. “Pakiza gone missing during the function,” explained Faiz. “We searched her a lot but did not find her but today (Sunday) we found her body in the water tank of the hall.” After recovering the body, a score of infuriated victim’s family members, relatives and neighbourers reached the wedding hall and staged protest. The mob then turned violent and ransacked the property of wedding hall and also attempted to set the marriage hall on fire.

Following the incident, extra contingent of law enforcers reached the site and controlled the situation. Police also apprehended nearly 10 staff members of the hall and initiated investigation. “The father of the victim lodged a complaint to the police station few days ago,” confirmed the Orangi Town SP Ali Asif. “Investigations to ascertain the death of the girl has been initiated as the police have yet to determine that either the girl died accidently or any criminal act was behind it.” Police officials said a case had been registered. Further investigation is underway.

Meanwhile, Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal took notice of the death of minor girl whose body was found from the water tank and sought report from SSP West about the incident. Siyal gave orders to the SSP West to present complete report about the death of minor girl Pakiza.


Moreover, a suspect was killed during an encounter in Sohrab Goth area. Nearly half dozen political workers were apprehended during the targeted raid of the law enforcement agency in Korangi area here on Sunday. Police said the raid was conducted on a tip-off at the hideout of the suspected criminals, adding during the raid, the criminals opened fire at the police and tried to escape. In retaliation, police killed one of the suspects. Two of his companions managed to escape under the cover of firing. It also claimed to have recovered weapons from his possession. The body was shifted to morgue for identification after medicolegal formalities at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Separately, a raid was conducted at the office of a political party located in the Korangi locality. Sources said the raid was conducted by the paramilitary force on a tip-off about the presence of suspected criminals. Nearly half dozen suspects were taken into custody and were shifted to undisclosed location. Four of them were said to be involved in criminal activities. However, no official statement was issued by the Rangers regarding the raid. Meanwhile, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) the other day obtained another 10-day physical remand of the two officers of Hyderabad Development Authority (HDA) who were arrested on Jan 13. The two officials, former Director General HDA Iqbal Memon, who currently holds the post of Chief Town Planner, and Abdul Manan Sheikh, Director Planning and Development HDA were arrested in a land scam concerning some 2,700 acres of land in Kohsar town. During the hearing Memon’s counsel pleaded that his client was suffering from serious health condition and that he immediately needs the medical care. Responding to the prayer the NAB court in Hyderabad while extending the remand ordered the NAB to submit report of Memon’s medical checkup.
