Unfairly judged

This is with the reference of Ms. Saima Aman Khan Sial's recently published article entitled "Shifting paradigm of war on terror". I agree with her that the present government is being unfairly singled out for criticism over its management of the fallout of Mumbai terror attacks. The government did reach out to all religious and political forces worth their name in a bid to take them into confidence and form a consensus-based policy vis--vis the threat from India. It is very rare in our political history that government of the day opts for consultations over critical external challenges. This was one such occasion, though, and all political forces extended full support to the government. This represents the coming of age of our political parties. Let us not be over-critical. We all need to support our government in this hour of national emergency. The policy of 'damned if you do and damned if you don't' should be shunned in the larger national interest. The government needs unstinted support of people to effectively respond to the Indian threat. Any internal fissures would encourage anti-Pakistan forces to fulfill their evil designs. -RIFFAT SULEMAN, Lahore, via e-mail, December 24.
