LAHORE - No extraordinary arrangements were made in the city to celebrate new-year night due to the advent of Muharram. This year, Lahorites did not hold any special event to celebrate the New Year's arrival amid the state of chaos and gloom. The business community, youngsters and other people distanced them from the merrymakings on the eve of New Year. Even no rush of people as only isolated groups of youngsters were witnessed on The Mall, which was known for such kinds of activities every year. The city's other main roads like the Main Boulevard, Gulberg, and the Defence Road and all the parks were presenting a deserted look late night on Wednesday. The rooms and roofs of the big hotels, restaurants and rest houses were not booked for the New Year night. Besides this, the Lahorites did not arrange parties in connection with New Year's Night at the public places, in the parks and at their residences. Even no live music concerts, fireworks and dinner parties were witnessed in the city. However, it is learnt that a very limited parties were arranged by the upper class and some isolated groups of youngsters at undisclosed places to avoid any legal action by the law enforcement agencies and wrath of other people. Some families arranged meetings at their residences to celebrate the last night of the year with simplicity. The police have made extraordinary arrangements to stop celebrations at the public places, on the roads and parks in connection with the New Year Night. The SP Mujahid Squad Syed Nasir Ali Rizvi said as many as 1,600 policemen of Mujahid Squad have been deputed to stop unlawful activities on the eve of New Year and in Muharram. The squad would petrol on the city's roads in 96 police vans, 35 cars, and 260 motorcycles.
