Electricity crisis

This has reference to Mr Washal Shah Khans letter appearing in Nation on Dec 28. I do not agree with the author that the short-term solution for the electricity crisis is wind turbines and solar power. Practically, the massive demand-supply gap cannot be immediately bridged through these sources. Moreover, the current cost of production is not affordable. Mr Khan states that coal based power is cheaper than thermal generation. In fact coal based generation is also thermal along with oil and gas. As per all research studies, the most feasible long-term option is hydel-power which is cheap, pollution free and is also renewable. To overcome electricity and water crises, construction of Kalabagh, Munda and Akhori Dams should be initiated at the earliest. QASIM IQBAL KHAN, Lahore, December 31.
