WAZIRABAD - The road construction machinery owned by the Highways Department has rusted through at its various offices in Gujranwala Division and has been of no use for the last 15 years, it has learnt.

As per sources, the department purchased the machinery including road rollers, tractor-trolleys, hand carts, sprayers etc. Then a contract system was introduced and the department started renting out the machinery to contractors.

The contractors later purchased their own machinery and the department dumped its machinery in compounds of their stores under the sky without proper safety measures.

With the passage of time, the machinery that can be seen lying in various subdivisional offices rusted through. Huge money could have been collected through timely auction of the machinery when it was functional but now it has become useless.

When contacted, the executive office of the department said that the machinery might be owned by another organisation and refused to detail in this respect.
